What works for thick hair
- Large claw clips, 9 cm or bigger. The standard 6 cm catcher is made for medium hair. For thick hair you need the jumbo size with a steel spring. Expect Rs 300 to 600 each, or a set of 3 for around Rs 900.
- Silk or satin scrunchies, oversized. A wide scrunchie grips more hair without pulling. Thin elastic bands snap on thick ponytails. Rs 200 to 400 each, cheaper in sets.
- Full-length hair ponies with a metal core. Look for the words full length or extra strong. A pack of 3 to 6 runs Rs 500 to 1,100.
- Banana clips and French twist combs. Old-fashioned but unbeatable for a quick updo on heavy hair. Rs 400 to 800.
What to skip
- Mini claw clips as your main clip. They are for face-framing sections, not a full bun.
- Thin snap clips on thick hair. They pop open.
- Any clip sold as one-size-fits-all with no measurement listed.
A quick sizing rule
Gather your hair as you would for a bun and measure the width of the bunch. If it is over 5 cm, buy jumbo clips only. If it is 3 to 5 cm, medium clips will hold. Under 3 cm, standard sizes are fine.
