An eyelash curler is the cheapest tool in any makeup bag and the one most people use wrong. Used properly it opens the eye more than any mascara. Used badly it pinches the lid, bends lashes at a right angle, or pulls them out. Here is how to get it right, and what to look for when buying one in Pakistan in 2026.
Before you start
- Curl before mascara, never after. Mascara makes lashes stiff, and curling stiff lashes breaks them.
- Check the silicone pad. If it is cracked, flattened or missing, replace it or the metal edge will crease your lashes.
- Warm the curler for 5 seconds with a hairdryer on low, then test it on the back of your hand. Warm curls hold longer. Hot burns.
The three-step curl
- Root. Open the curler, look down slightly, and place it as close to the lash line as you can without touching the lid. Close gently and hold for 5 seconds. If it pinches, you are on skin, so open and move out a millimetre.
- Middle. Open, move the curler halfway along the lashes, close and hold for 5 seconds.
- Tip. Open, move to the ends, close for 3 seconds. This gives a soft curve instead of one sharp bend.
Pump gently, do not clamp. The pressure should feel like pressing a key on a phone, not squeezing a clip.
Then mascara
Apply mascara straight after, wiggling from root to tip. A waterproof formula holds a curl longest in humid weather. Do not curl again after mascara.
