What gold plated really means
Gold plating is a very thin layer of gold, usually under one micron, bonded onto a base metal. The base is what decides how long the piece lasts. Cheap plating goes onto brass, zinc or copper alloy. Those metals react with sweat and humidity, the plating wears through, and the piece goes dark or green. In Karachi or Lahore summers that can take as little as three to four weeks.
What stainless steel means
Stainless steel, most often grade 316L, is the same family of metal used in surgical tools and watches. It does not rust, does not react with skin, and does not need a coating to stay bright. Gold-coloured steel is made by bonding a colour layer onto the steel itself, and because the base never corrodes, the colour lasts far longer than plating on brass.

- Skin reaction: plated brass can cause green marks and itching. Steel is hypoallergenic for almost everyone.

- Look: plated brass often has a warmer, more yellow gold tone. Steel gold is slightly paler, closer to real 18k.
When plated still makes sense
One-event pieces. A heavy bridal set for a single wedding does not need to survive a year of sweat, and plated alloy gives you that look at a fraction of the cost. For anything you will wear every week, buy steel.
How to care for both
- Put jewellery on after perfume and lotion, not before.
- Take it off before washing hands, wudu, or the gym.
- Wipe with a dry cloth and store in a closed pouch, not an open dish.
